NIH Small Business Transition Grants for New Entrepreneurs (STTR R41/R42, no clinical trials)

NIH invites U.S. small businesses to apply for STTR Phase I or Fast-Track grants that place early-career scientists as PD/PIs to develop health technologies with commercial potential. Eligibility

United States Small Business Concerns (SBCs) – for‑profit entities with a U.S. place of business that operate primarily in the U.S. or make a significant contribution to the U.S. economy; legal forms include individual proprietorships, partnerships, LLCs, corporations, joint ventures, associations, trusts, or cooperatives; <=500 employees including affiliates
Joint Ventures of eligible small business concerns – JV must have <50% participation by foreign business entities; each entity in the JV must independently meet the SBIR/STTR ownership and control criteria; JV subject to 13 CFR 121.705(b) registration/proposal requirements
SBCs majority‑owned by multiple venture capital operating companies, hedge funds, or private equity firms – SBIR ONLY (not eligible for STTR); no single VCOC/hedge fund/private equity firm may own >50% unless that firm itself qualifies as a small business >50% owned and controlled by U.S. individuals
Tribal/Native SBCs – small business concerns >50% owned by an Indian tribe, Alaska Native Corporation (ANC), or Native Hawaiian Organization (NHO), or a wholly owned business entity of such tribe/ANC/NHO
